I think, upon looking at these pictures, every one of us would assume that they capture a moment following some grand emotional hug session between the boys - when, in fact, every time Sam looked at Dean this way, he was soulless.
I think we underestimate the power of Sam’s love for Dean, even when we think we don’t. These two have been there for each other since the beginning of everything. They saw only each other - and maybe, every once in a while, John - every single day from the times when they took baths together, to scraping their knees bloody from falling off bikes, to their formative years, to real-cold-harsh adulthood. This isn’t like Dean meeting Cassie at 22 years of age and falling in love with her; he knows how to live without her, because he did it for over two decades when he was at his most helpless. And despite how much he loved her, this isn’t like Sam loving Jess, either, because Jess couldn’t - and wouldn’t - love him completely, not for all his flaws, not for the demon blood, not for the fact that he is a murderer. The only person who can love Sam unconditionally and know, at the depths of his heart, who Sam Winchester is - is Dean. Neither of them will ever, not even if you give him a million years in heaven or in hell, get over the other. Together they are one thing that just happened to be torn into two pieces.
No matter whether he has his soul intact or demon blood coursing through his veins or Lucifer walking around in his psyche, Sam’s only reason for living will always be Dean. As for Dean - he died for Sam, he killed innocent people for Sam, he stole for Sam, he lied for Sam, he lived for Sam. Death, demons, angels, Leviathan be damned; their greatest love story will always be each other. This is why I ship Wincest.
